There Is No Better Way

by Bryan Gibson

April 25, 2008

One of our goals with this article is to encourage everyone to walk in the truth, to walk in the pathway of righteousness. If you even have the thought of choosing some other path, stop and consider the benefits to walking in God’s path.

It is a very pleasant path to travel. “Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace” (Proverbs 3:17). It brings pleasantness to our marriage, to home life as a whole, to our relationships with others, and even to the hardships of life, because by walking in God’s wisdom, we are able to keep everything in perspective.

It will provide our children with the greatest blessing. “The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7). Timothy’s life was blessed because Lois and Eunice, his grandmother and mother, walked in God’s path (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14). The same was true for John the Baptist, because his parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth, walked in God’s path (Luke 1:6). Walk in some other path and we are doing our children a great disservice.

The companions along this path are much better. “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20). Think about the kind of companions we have on this path—people like Paul, Peter, Timothy, Aquila and Priscilla, and other righteous men and women of the Bible. And our present-day companions aren’t bad either, because these are people who care for our souls, people who want to help us stay on the right path (Isaiah 30:20-21). The prodigal son chose another path, at least for awhile, and his companions didn’t exactly come through for him (Luke 15:16).

It is a path we can walk with integrity. “He who walks with integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will become known” (Proverbs 10:9). We don’t ever have to worry about “covering our tracks”—if we stay on the right path. To get to where we want to go on this path, we don’t ever have to lie, or cheat, or take advantage of anyone.

We can sleep soundly at night. “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet” (Proverbs 3:24). We can sleep soundly when we walk this path, when we know that God is pleased with us, that all is well with our soul.

There is help from God along this path. “He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints” (Proverbs 2:7-8). Satan’s task is to get us off the right path, but God is there to help us stay on. “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16). We’re on our own if we choose some other path.

It is a brightly lit path that grows brighter and brighter. “The path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day” (Proverbs 4:18). We may not fully appreciate the beauty of this path right now, but we need to keep going, because it will get brighter and brighter.

It is the ONLY path that leads to eternal life, to eternal joy and gladness. “In the way of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death” (Proverbs 12:28). Isaiah spoke of a “highway of holiness,” a highway that leads to “joy and gladness,” to a place where “sorrow and sighing shall flee away” (Isaiah 35:8-10).
