Note: This article, as you can see from the first paragraph, has a little age on it. It’s doubtful, though, that things have changed a whole lot in the last four years.
Here are some excerpts from a column entitled, “Soap Opera Update,” which appeared in the July 11, 2004 edition of the Montgomery Advertiser. Ask yourself as you read these excerpts: Do Christians have any business watching these programs?
All My Children
Greenlee floored Kendall with her admission that Ryan was going to take Kendall back but then found her in bed with Jonathan.
As the World Turns
Initially thrilled to learn that she’s pregnant, Jessica was crushed to realize that the baby could be Doc’s.
Bold and Beautiful
Thomas revealed his feelings about Caitlin to Brooke, unaware that Caitlin is growing closer to Rick.
After commiserating with Nick in a bar, a drunken Stephanie took Nick’s advice to go to the wedding and show Brooke who’s in charge.
General Hospital
Georgie and Dillon began to make love, but he wasn’t able to finish.
When Sonny ordered a hit on Faith, she warned him that if anything happened to her, Carly would find out that Sonny is the father of Sam’s baby.
Guiding Light
Bill admitted his mistakes in a peacemaking gesture to Josh but revealed that it was just a ploy to win back control of Lewis.
One Life to Live
Kevin refused to believe Blair’s claim that neither he nor Todd is Ace’s father and started divorce proceedings against Kelly.
Passions
Theresa shocked Whitney by declaring that Fox is in love with her. Theresa later had to think fast when Chad grilled her about Fox’s mystery woman.
Please consider how the following passages relate to these situations:
“Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way” (Psalms 119:37).
“Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life” (Proverbs 4:23).
“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy; meditate on these things” (Philippians 4:8).
